Experience this introductory online program at your own pace, by reading, watching videos, engaging in practices, and reflecting along the way. Plan to spend about 12 hours in total, with the flexibility to spread them out as needed.
This is an introductory online program designed to teach the fundamentals of scribing—the practice of visually representing ideas in real time while people talk. By participating, you'll learn how to capture conversations through drawing, making ideas visible to enhance collective understanding.
This program is self-paced, meaning you can engage with the content on your own schedule. You'll read, watch videos, and practice skills along the way, dedicating approximately 12 hours in total, spread out over as much time as you need.
The course is divided into three main components: Drawing, where you’ll explore mark-making in both figurative and abstract forms; Visual Notetaking, which involves listening and sketching in a personal format like a notebook or tablet; and Scribing, where you’ll create real-time visual summaries for groups. Additional modules cover materials, setup, and resources.
You can move through the content in any order, engaging with a mix of readings, videos, and reflective exercises.
This program is led by Reilly Dow and Kelvy Bird, with contributions from Jessica Riehl and interviews featuring Jayce Pei Yu Lee and Alfredo Carlo. Together, they bring real-world expertise, sharing best practices, challenges, and opportunities in the field. You'll also have the chance to ask questions and receive tailored guidance throughout your learning journey.
No prior drawing experience is needed! To participate, have a journal or loose paper for reflective exercises. For drawing, you can use a notebook, markers, pencils, or a tablet with a drawing app like Procreate. It’s also helpful to document your work with a camera or smartphone for tracking progress and sharing insights.
Most importantly, bring a beginner’s mindset—curiosity and openness will enhance your learning.
All course content is available immediately upon registration, with no time limit for completion. Faculty support is included to enhance your learning experience.
